Great interview. I am absolutely inspired by GBL and am glad to see it develop.
One thing Helen didn't mention but I am sure exists within her GBL is humor (and actually all emotion including fear - OMG this could happen to me!). The very difficult and delicate humor aspect - to inspire the learner to smile or feel they are clever to have made the connection - is so valuable. It is difficult but perfect for gaming (listen to any 10 year old playing Mario.)
On the larger GBL field, I am curious about how effective GBL is when it needs to translate across cultures (example: English language, same training need; learner culture is US vs India vs Hong Kong). Or same culture across different languages.
I do English-language ID that is translated into other languages for learners working outside US for US companies (to reinforce the US corporate culture and certain fear factors) so I wonder if GBL would be a good vehicle.
While I speculate that the younger (and more "Mario" oriented) learners would trend across language/cultures, do you or Helen (or lurkers) have experience or opinions on this? Anecdotes? Yes, the good, the bad and the funny.
Thanks, again.

@Linc - Thanks for your feedback. I don't have research based numbers segregating corporate vs. higher education sector spend in e-learning in India. However, based on our experience and industry inputs, higher ed. would not have more than 10-15% share of the overall e-learning spend in India (total size approx. $80M currently). This is however likely to change in current and coming year as lot of universities are now getting grants from MoHRD, & IGNOU etc for e-learning activities.

@Ajase - Thanks for leaving back your feedback. In terms of number breakup it's approximately 70% for content services, 20% for technology, and 10% for value added and related services.

Hope this was of some help.

@ Sunil - This data includes content, and product & related services usage.

@ Bikash - Thanks for your feedback

@ Srikanth - Thanks for your feedback. We however don't have elearning usage data categorized on basis of domain or subject. I would however guesstimate that majority of usage is currently in BFSI, IT/ITeS, and Primary & Secondary Education.

Good post. As an LMS provider ourselves, the obvious question is always "oh like Moodle?" - except that I think your four evaluation questions are absolutely key. It can happen both ways: Sometimes customers are scared of oss because of the perception of a less-complete end-to-end solution, and on the flip side, some customers only see the 'free' element and rush after it.

In the end, it all comes down to the organisation fit, there will never be a one-size fits all LMS solution, open source or otherwise.
